4000m summits

The big, beautiful and classic high summits of the Alps.

Virtually all of the 4000m peaks of the Alps are within easy reach of Leysin. So, if you want to climb alpine summits over 4000m (see summit info) this is the ideal programme for you. Each 4000m trip focuses on an alpine range and has a flexible programme to take advantage of the best weather and conditions. The Oberland and Valais / Pennine trips aim for the classic PD routes on 4000m peaks (if you are interested in the more difficult routes and peaks (AD and above) see technical summits).

Each trip programme is tailored to the aspirations of the group, and the exact itinerary will depend upon the experience and acclimatisation of the party, and the weather and conditions at the time.

4000m - summit info

There are several published lists of the 4000m peaks in the Alps. Some list 53 main peaks with over 90 subsidiary summits, others list up to 180 main peaks and subsidiary summits combined. In 1994 the UIAA Bulletin published criteria and a list with 82 4000m summits in the Alps (see side panel). Some of the summits are accessible, technically easy (F and PD) and can be linked in a traverse; other 4000ers are remote and difficult (AD and above, see technical summits).
