Eiger - summit info

The notorious North Face, which was first climbed in 1938, has made the Eiger one of the best known mountains in the world.  So much so that the first ascent by the West Ridge in 1858 is almost a forgotten detail.

The West Ridge (AD) is considered the easiest route, but suffers from loose rock and can be difficult to follow in poor weather.  In good conditions the Mittellegi Ridge (D) is a superb exposed rock ridge with fixed ropes.  The South Ridge (AD) tends to be the most reliable route from the Monchjoch Hut.

How to enjoy the Eiger

To enjoy an ascent of the Eiger you should have good experience of climbing on exposed alpine ridges, be fit and well acclimatised.  Being able to descend quickly and safely is vital to avoid being caught in an afternoon thunderstorm and the hazards of lightening strikes with strong localised winds and precipitation.
